Mothers Union
Annual General Meeting 9 January 2012
The meeting was again held at Newbiggin Golf Club. We were delighted to welcome Adrian Burton, Manager of The Hawthorns in Ashington, who had come to pass on the thanks of the residents for the donations of food and toiletries sent during the year. He was assured of our continued support.
The Treasurer's Report showed that the Branch continued to remain in a sound financial position. This has enabled us to make a payment to church funds to cover the cost of heating and lighting the Church Centre for our monthly meetings. Fundraising events during the year were well supported, in particular the Daffodil Lunch, which resulted in £450 being sent to the Mothers Union AFIA appeal.
An overview of the year's activities, events and invited speakers was given to members by the Secretary, which highlighted the friendship and fellowship shared in the Branch.
Carol's report to the membership expressed her thanks not only to the committee but to the whole membership for their support and generosity throughout the year. Carol also thanked the members for undertaking extra support work and a raised workload during the current interregnum.
The meeting was followed by an excellent dinner in a warm and convivial atmosphere.
The next meeting will be held in the Church Centre on Monday 13 February when the speaker will be Eileen Brown and the theme "Two-way Family Favourites".
Margaret Norman 1921-2012
On a fresh, bright day when Margaret would have been trundling along the prom, we were instead saying "Goodbye" and handing her back to our Father, in a celebration of her life with a wonderful choice of hymns, in a well attended church service, sympathetically conducted by Rev Alan Simpson.
Margaret had a fierce determination to live her life to the full regardless of incapacity and pain. Her tenacity was to be admired, but finally her body submitted and she left this precious life and entered intp that new stage of life in which she firmly believed.
Being a long time member of the Mothers Union and the Womens Institute, her interests were varied - her love of the Arts, Creative Writing and, in earlier years, holidaying with friends, travelling with her children and supporting local charities, including the RNLI.
After meeting husband James during the war and arriving to life in Newbiggin, they shared a loving happy marriage made complete with the arrival of children Ann and James. Although coming from the south, Newbiggin has been her home for many years and she will, undoubtedly, be remembered as one who entered into and was interested in all village life.

PRAYER OF THE MONTH
O Thou who camest from above
A lovely warm good mood to impart
Kindle a sense of selfish love
And warm the cockles of my heart!
There let it for my glory burn
Through self-congratulatory haze
Then shall we to each other turn
And name good works with fervent praise!
Thus I confirm my heart's desire
To work and speak and think for me
O let me sit by cosy fire
And think of what I'll get for free!
O please gloss o'er Thy Holy Word
As I with blinkered eyes ignore
The poor, the sick, the sore disturbed
Yet who, in fact, is really poor?
