Welcome to the web site of St Bartholomew's Church

July and August are packed with events in Newbiggin.

On July 6th we celebrate Vetrerans Day with a military Tattoo at 10.45 am  in the Church Point car park, followed by a 'drumhead' service on the same site at 12 noon.

The following Sunday (July 13th) at 6pm we are hosting an evening service for the whole of the Morpeth and Bedlington Deaneries to welcome Bishop Brian Farran, of Newcastle New South Wales (Australia). Bishop Brian will preach and there will be an opportunity afterwards to compare notes on our very different Newcastles before he heads south for the Lambeth Conference.

Harbour Week begins with the annual service of Blessing the boats in the Lifeboat House at 3pm on Sunday afternoon, July 20th, and ends with the Lifeboat Fair Day the following Sunday, beginning at 1.30pm.

We were delighted to welcome a visitor from Sri Lanka to some of our services at the end of June. Neel Pushpa Kumar, a teacher in Sri Lanka whose school has links with Astley High School, where Ian Knight, member of our congregation is headteacher, was staying with Ian and worshipped with us on a couple of Sundays.

He writes about the importance of this link:

I am Neel Pushpa Kumar, the Co-ordinator of English Medium classes of Nannapurawa Maha Vidalaya. We have a joint partnership project between Nannapurawa, Sri Lanka and Astley Community High School in Seaton Delaval. We have developed good understanding between the two schools, so I am happy to say that we have already exchanged lots of cultural, religious, social, geographical and economic differences. I feel the link between the schools does immense service to both the schools exchanging their views with each other. As I think this link should be an example to the whole society to lessen the slight differences among the nations. Sri Lanka and England are faraway countries, but they have built a good relationship without considering colour or language differences. Today we hear every part of the world goes to war because people are not ready to respect the others view. They go against each other. We all know that humans are intelligent, so if we understand each others needs and are ready to respect each other, there won't be any conflict or issues in any part of the world.

Most of the students who come to my school are from farming families, sometimes they come to school without breakfast because their parents' income is very low and they face many difficulties in their lives. Mr Iain Knight visited out school and made a project which is helpful to both the schools. As a result of the joint partnership project, we have achieved lots of targets. Mr Knight, Headteacher of Astley Community High School, has already sent to our students stationery, sports equipment and clothes, apparatus for the laboratory and its renovation, a laptop along with a video camera. Apart from that, he doesn't forget to send the students reading materials frequently. As a result of these, the students of our school do their studies better than before and they have already shown their talents. In the meantime, the students of both the schools are writing letters to exchange their slight differences. I think this link will help the students to understand that there are no more differences between each other if they are far away. In time, they will understand that the whole world is a village or a family.

Please continue to help us support Ian's project - Next month he is doing a 1,000 mile solo bike ride - why not sponsor him?

If  you would like to do this, please contact Astley High School or myself.
