Welcome to the web site of St Bartholomew's Church
All the fun of the Fayre!
St. Bartholomew’s Fayre this year was not exactly an easy ride.
This was the final year in office for Josie, our convenor, and it is a tribute to her calm efficiency and good-natured organisational skills that all passed off smoothly because in spite of months of planning there were a few hurdles to overcome which no-one could have foreseen. The first blow was the news that Kathleen, our chief flower lady, needed an operation .. worrying at the best of times and especially at this time of the year. Just when she was expecting her nimble fingers to be working their magic on the blooms for the Festival of Flowers she found herself in hospital while other nimble fingers worked their magic on HER! Fortunately she had time to delegate all the arrangements to her trusty band of helpers, who produced a magical display of rainbow colours to illustrate the Liturgical year … and even more fortunately Kathleen herself is already taking the first steps to recovery after her ordeal supported by the good wishes and prayers of family, friends and Flower Festival visitors. No doubt her convalescence will be put to good use planning next year's event.
The Village Show attracted a lot of attention from entrants and visitors alike. Some classes even had to be moved to accommodate the number of entries and our judges had their work cut out comparing and assessing the many flowers, vegetables, craft works, pictures and baking etc. The various demonstrators were wonderfully patient and informative and generated a lot of interest … even allowing some of us to ‘have a go’. (Rita the Singin’ Hinny lady was a particularly popular new attraction.) Meanwhile the sweet sound of Northumbrian pipes provided a soothing background to all the activity.
Sunday brought another disappointment when the Pageant had to be cancelled for the first time ever because of the strong winds. We did, however, manage to persuade their Royal Highnesses to join us in St. Bartholomew's that evening to share our worship and present the village with its charter, prompting the Archdeacon of Lindisfarne to comment that it was the first time he had ever preached to Royalty. (It is hoped to present more of the performance in October, INDOORS .. more details later).
On Monday the exhibits were whisked away to be replaced as usual by all sorts of stalls and games-- and visitors and takings appear so far to be well up to expectations.
All in all the weekend was a triumph. WELL DONE EVERYONE!
